The Kwara State House of Assembly has begun steps to resolving the long standing crisis in the state Water Cooperation in a bid to avert disservice to the people.
This followed a Motion of Matter of General Public Importance moved by a member representing Kaiama/Kemaji/Wajibe Constituency, Hon. Halidu Danbaba.
Hon. Danbaba who is the Chairman, House Committee on Water Resources said he realized in his investigation, that there was an industrial dispute between the staff and the management of the corporation,
According to him, the General Manager (GM) has been in acting capacity for more than 4 years and the staff have levelled a lot of allegations boardering corruption against him.
He called on the House to look into the matter and get it resolved so that residents will not lack water supply due to the looming strike by the staff.
In his contribution, the Deputy Speaker of the House, Hon. Adetiba Raphael said the the mater is a serious one and should not be swept under carpet because water is life.
The member representing, Oke-Ero Constituency said stepping in will make the stakeholders know that government is aware of their plight and ready to bring about a lasting solution.
Other lawmakers who spoke on the matter agitated for a substantive GM to be appointed, claiming that a substantive GM will have the right to do certain things that could restore nomalcy which an acting may lack the capacity to do.
They said as a people’s parliament, they must look into it to ensure there is a total solution so that huge amount of money spent on the cooperation by the government is justified.
The Speaker of the House, Rt Hon. Salihu Yakubu Danladi therefore directed the House Committee on Water Resources to investigate the matter and report to the House in the next legislative date.
