Kwara State House of Assembly has called for licensing and monitoring mechanism to checkmate criminal activities of scavengers in the State.

This was part of the resolutions of the House, after considering a Matter of General Public Importance titled ” Need to Curb Criminal Activities of Scavengers in the State” raised by House Leader, Hon. Oba Magaji Abdulkadir during today’s sitting.

Hon. Magaji-Abdulkadir representing Ilorin Central Constituency observed that most of the so-called scavengers engage in theft and other unwholesome acts.

He alerted the House on the danger inherent in the activities of scavengers and advocated the need to curtail their excesses before the situation gets out of hands.

Lawmakers in their separate submissions emphasized the need to ban the scavengers in the state in view of security threats associated with their activities.

They narrated their personal experiences on the havoc wrecked by scavengers in their constituencies under the disguise of economic survival and asked the scavengers to always go to dump sites for scavenging exhibition instead of loitering around communities.

Reading the resolutions of the House, Speaker, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Salihu Danladi urged the Governor to direct State Ministry of Environment to register Association of Scavengers to ensure proper profiling.

Engineer Danladi-Salihu enjoined Community Development Associations to be vigilant in halting the nefarious acts of the scavengers and charged residents of the state to key into the state government waste management procedure to eradicate illegal scavenging
